چکیده

Damage patterns on the articular surface of the proximal tibia, including cartilage degen23 eration in osteoarthritic knees and damage of polyethylene knee prostheses after total knee replacement, provide information related to knee joint biomechanics and damage 25 mechanisms at the articular surface. This study reports articular damage patterns and knee kinematics assessed in the knees of older subjects, before and after total knee 27 replacement. The damage patterns are used to evaluate computational dynamic contact and tribological models that predict polyethylene damage in a patient-specific total knee 29 replacement model.

Management of the Stiff Total Knee Arthroplasty with Revision to a Total Condylar Bearing Rotating Platform Prosthesis

Total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is performed to relieve pain and restore function in patients with arthritic knees. There are approximately 700,000 knee replacements performed each year, and this number is projected to reach 3.5 million per year by 2030 [1]. Although knee replacements offer significant improvements in quality of life, they are not without complications. Stiffness is a known compl...

A comprehensive combined experimental and computational framework for pre-clinical wear simulation of total knee replacements

A more robust pre-clinical wear simulation framework is required in order to simulate wider and higher ranges of activities, observed in different patient populations such as younger more active patients. Such a framework will help to understand and address the reported higher failure rates for younger and more active patients (National_Joint_Registry, 2016). The current study has developed and...

Investigation of Wear Behavior of Biopolymers for Total Knee Replacements Through Invitro Experimentation

The average life span of knee prosthesis used in Total Knee Replacement (TKR) is approximately 10 to 15 years. Literature indicates that the reasons for implant failures include wear, infection, instability, and stiffness. However, the majority of failures are due to wear and tear of the prosthesis. The most common biopolymer used in TKR  is Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene (UHMWPE). Pr...

Type 3 finger length pattern is associated with total knee replacements due to osteoarthritis but not with hip replacements or hand osteoarthritis in the elderly: The AGES-Reykjavik study

BACKGROUND Recent case-control studies have shown an association between type 3 finger length pattern (longer ring finger than index finger) and knee osteoarthritis. This large cross-sectional study tests the hypothesis that the type 3 pattern is associated with total joint replacements due to osteoarthritis in a large population based study. METHODS Finger length ratios were assessed visuall...

The effect of insert conformity and material on total knee replacement wear

The mean average life is increasing; therefore, there is a need to increase the lifetime of the prostheses. To fulfil this requirement, new prosthetic designs and materials are being introduced. Two of the design parameters that may affect wear of total knee replacements, and hence the expected lifetime, are the insert conformity and material. Computational models have been used extensively for...
